Broadway is pleased to announce Drink Me, a solo exhibition of new paintings by New York artist Mie Yim.

Made over the last year, both in her Bronx studio and at the Sharpe-Walentas Residency in Brooklyn, this group of work is ample evidence of Yim’s pure painterly indulgence and exuberant spirit. The artist manifests the tangled, ecstatic, emotional sprawl of her life which began in South Korea and spread out across oceans—first to Hawaii, then on to New York.

Each canvas is steeped in this commitment to feeling, both in form and texture. Riotous eruptions of color emerge from excessive accumulations of staccato brush strokes conjuring morphing critters, fur, sleek reptilian skin, stray eyes, and the ricocheting lights of a disco ball.

In fact, the dancefloor’s ecstatic physicality is omnipresent here and suffuses the paintings with a muscular variety of freedom that is almost audible. As the exhibition title suggests, a viewer experiences wild shifts of scale and vantage, from the microscopic to celestial within a single painting. Furthermore, her gleeful liberation from distinct subject, as well as from any absolute imperatives of abstraction, allows Yim to engage the senses on a more fundamental level, plumbing memory and sense-memory in equal measure—curiouser and curiouser…
